SUGAR LAND -- Fort Bend Independent School District voted Monday to lay off 52 school employees.

That number is much lower than the 275 originally listed for nonrenewal of contracts.

The new total only includes certified teaching positions and certified non-teaching professional positions.

"Those employees have been placed in positions that have become available due to vacancies, resignations and retirements," FBISD chief communications officer Mary Ann Simpson said.

But it is unclear what will happen to hundreds of other positions the district previously proposed cutting as it faces a $20 million budget deficit...

MCC comment: When will the vendor feeding end that caused this budget crisis?

Did any senior administrators come under the budget ax?

93 More FBISD Teachers To Receive Notice Of Non-Renewal This Week
By: Jamie Mock on Mon, Apr 5, 2010News

The letters are the inevitable outcome of the district declaring a “financial exigency” as a result of a possible $20 million deficit for the 2010-2011 school year – the fourth budget deficit in a row...

FBN: Jenney Agrees To ‘Delay’ Global Science Center Opening Until 2012
By: Jamie Mock on Mon, Feb 15, 2010 News

More than 1,000 Fort Bend Independent School District employees submitted to the district ideas on how to reduce the looming $18 million deficit budget, and included in the suggestions was postponing the proposed Global Center for Science and Technology or abandoning the plan altogether.

FBISD Superintendent Timothy Jenney sent an e-mail to employees at the end of last week, outlining the top ten suggestions that received the most comments from staff.

The total capital cost of the center – which is to include a planetarium, giant rotating lobby globe, interactive labs and a “Sci-Max” theater – have been estimated by a district-appointed feasibility committee at $26.4 million...
